According to iPhone news site, 148Apps.biz,  the number of active apps on Apple’s App Store now sits at over 250,000; a figure which has been reached in just over two years.

Of these quarter of a million apps, the most popular category is the Books section with over 43,000 apps.

The Top Ten most popular categories to date are:

1. Books – 43,976 (17.35%)
2. Games – 36,687 (14.48%)
3. Entertainment – 28,864 (11.39%)
4. Education – 19,594 (7.73%)
5. Lifestyle – 16,099 (6.35%)
6. Travel – 15,666 (6.18%)
7. Utilities – 15,229 (6.01%)
8. Music – 10,574 (4.17%)
9. Reference – 9,815 (3.87%)
10. 10.  Sports – 8,784 (3.47%

Other interesting findings indicate that free apps have topped 75,000 whilst the current average app price is $2.90.
